Check-ups and cleaning
A full examination and a professional clean, so small problems are found while they are still small.
A check-up is the quietest, cheapest dentistry there is. We look at every tooth, your gums, your bite and the soft tissue of your mouth, and the hygienist removes the hard build-up that brushing cannot.
What it includes
- Examination of teeth, gums, bite and the inside of the mouth
- Low-dose digital X-rays, only when they are due or needed
- Scale and polish with the oral hygienist
- Gum measurements to pick up early gum disease
- Practical advice on brushing, flossing and diet
Afterwards
- Teeth can feel sensitive for a day after a deep clean. A sensitive toothpaste helps.
- Most people come every six months. If your gums and teeth are healthy and stable, we may suggest once a year.

Questions
Check-ups and cleaning: your questions.
How often should I have a check-up?
Every six to twelve months for most adults. We base the interval on your risk: people with gum problems or frequent decay come more often, people with very stable mouths less often.
Do I need X-rays every time?
No. X-rays between the teeth are usually taken every one to two years, more often only if there is a reason. Our digital X-rays use a very small dose.
Does a scale and polish hurt?
It should not. If your gums are tender, we can numb the area first. Tell us if anything is uncomfortable.
