Children's dentistry
Gentle first visits, check-ups and fillings for children, with time to get comfortable.
A child's first visits set the tone for life. We keep them short, explain everything in words children understand, and let them sit in the chair, ride it up and down and count their teeth before we do anything else.
What it includes
- First visit from the first tooth, or by the first birthday
- Check-ups and gentle cleaning
- Fissure sealants to protect the grooves of back teeth
- Fluoride varnish for children at higher risk of decay
- Fillings for baby and adult teeth
Afterwards
- Brush twice a day with a smear of fluoride toothpaste under three, and a pea-sized amount from three to six.
- Help with brushing until about age seven or eight.

Questions
Children's dentistry: your questions.
When should my child first see a dentist?
When the first tooth appears, or by the first birthday. Early visits are mostly about getting used to the chair and giving parents advice.
Do baby teeth really need fillings?
Often yes. Baby back teeth stay until about age eleven or twelve, and decay in them can cause pain and infection, and affect the adult teeth underneath.
My child is scared. What can I do?
Tell us before the visit. Avoid words like hurt or needle at home, and let us explain things in our own way. Short, positive visits build confidence.
