Dental emergencies

Same-day appointments for toothache, swelling, broken and knocked-out teeth, kept free every weekday.

We keep appointments free every weekday for urgent problems. Call as early as you can and tell us what happened. If it is out of hours, the message on our line explains what to do.

What it includes

  • Toothache and dental infections
  • Broken, chipped or knocked-out teeth
  • Lost fillings and crowns
  • Bleeding or pain after an extraction
  • Injuries to the mouth, lips and gums

Afterwards

  • Go to a hospital emergency unit straight away if swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, or if you struggle to breathe or swallow.
  • For a knocked-out adult tooth, every minute counts. Follow the first aid steps in our knocked-out tooth guide and call us on the way.

Questions

Dental emergencies: your questions.

Is a knocked-out tooth an emergency?

Yes. An adult tooth put back within about 30 minutes has the best chance of surviving. Hold it by the white part, keep it in milk or in your cheek, and call us immediately.

What can I do for toothache until I see you?

Rinse with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the pack, and hold a cold compress on the outside of the cheek. Do not put aspirin on the gum.

Do you see emergencies for people who are not patients?

Yes. You do not need to be a registered patient for an emergency appointment.
